THE MP for Southend West and Leigh is supporting calls from a parliamentary committee for more to be done to protect victims of non-consensual intimate images.
The Women and Equalities Committee is calling for tougher penalties for people who post internet images that people haven’t agreed to, including Revenge Porn and Deep Fakes.
MP David Burton-Sampson, who sits on the committee, said that it causes untold damage to people who are the subjects of these images.
He said: “We want to see increased compensation for victims, we want new offences for taking images without consent, to help protect people from abuse and for the possession of such material to be made an offence too. Synthetic content is also a problem.
“There is a gap in the regulatory framework and we would like to see a statutory body to support victims and oversee content.
“This kind of abuse is devastating for the victims and it is growing.
“Our report makes strong recommendations including adding this abuse to the common definition of Violence against women and Girls.”
The Committee heard evidence of its scale and impact, with a tenfold increase in just four years and more than 22,000 reported cases in 2024.
