MP’s Referendum Call – MARK Francois, Conservative MP for Rayleigh and Wickford, has condemned the cancelling Essex local elections.
Speaking in the House of Commons, during a statement on Devolution, Mr Francois condemned Labour’s decision to cancel local elections for Essex County Council and he reiterated his calls for a county-wide referendum on the proposals.
This came as the Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Local Government, Angela Rayner, said that holding elections this year, for authorities that will not exist in 12 months time, was a waste of tax-payers money.
During his statement, Mr Francois said: “The reason Labour are cancelling the local elections is just anti-democratic, it’s as simple as that.
“They don’t want to hear it, but it is as simple as that and if the Secretary of State really believes that there is widespread support within Essex for this Devolution process, let’s have a referendum to prove it!
“Finally, if local Government is as skint as she says- why is this Government paying £18 billion to Mauritius to rent back a base that we already own?”
In response, the Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner said that delaying the elections in Essex would still happen.
