Mud Rescue Practice - EMERGENCY crews took part in a major joint rescue training operation in Leigh.

EMERGENCY crews took part in a major joint rescue training operation in Leigh.
Coastguard rescue teams joined Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and Essex Lowland Search and Rescue at Two Tree Island for the exercise.
The simulated incident involved three separate casualties who were trapped in deep mud around 100 metres offshore.
Urban Search and Rescue specialists and drone operators supported firefighters and coastguard officers from Canvey and Southend as they practiced techniques to bring the stranded people safely ashore.
Teams also used the what3words location app to pinpoint the positions of the casualties across the tidal terrain.
A spokesman for HM Coastguard Canvey said: “The South Essex coastline is made up of large areas of sticky, deep mud. What may look safe to walk on, can quickly trap even the strongest of walkers.
“If you find yourself stuck in the mud, it’s important to do the below to prevent further sinking.
Sit Back: Lean back to spread your weight.
“Don’t Struggle: Avoid thrashing; it makes you sink faster.
“If you can, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard along our coastline, or the Fire Service inland.
“Shout as loud as you can to someone on the shore.
“Keep Calm: Stay still and wait for rescue.
“It’s often said mud rescues are one of the most physically demanding rescues emergency responders face, that’s why joint exercises with colleagues such as this are important to share knowledge and practices.”
