LEIGH’S Music Man Project sang for the Prime Minister and his wife at a special concert at No.10 Downing Street.

The inspirational and award-wining music charity provides accessible music tuition to people with disabilities.

Joining them, along with the charity’s founder David Stanley BEM, was Southend West MP Anna Firth, who introduced and enjoyed the performance alongside Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murthy.

Mr Stanley said: “I was so grateful for the opportunity to run a music workshop in Downing Street.

“My work as both Disability and Access Ambassador and as leader of The Music Man Project has given me some truly incredible experiences, which I will cherish forever.

“Who would have thought that when I started with one student in 1999 that I’d be singing ‘High Low Gangnam Style’ at the top of my voice while my students danced with the Prime Minister’s wife at 10 Downing Street!

“I was told to turn my piano down as ‘someone’ was on an important call downstairs! The Prime Minister soon joined us, much to the excitement of my students!

“I’m deeply proud that the UK leads the way in accessible arts and culture, particularly through the wonderful Music Man Project – based here in Southend.”

Posting on Facebook about the day, Mrs Firth added: “The excellent The Music Man Project, David Stanley and I travelled to Number 10 to perform and share their music with the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his lovely wife Mrs Murty.

“The musical group are world-class and performed with infectious smiles and talent.

“They are used to performing on a large-scale with at the Royal Albert Hall, so they were unfazed and evidently happy to be enjoying and sharing their music with others.”

As well as performing at the London Palladium, The Music Man Project has recently collaborated with The Royal Marines to connect elite military musicians and people with learning disabilities through the universal language of music.

Mr Stanley also works with charities overseas to bring musical education to communities all over the world.
