FAMILIES are flocking to get into the newly opened breakfast club at a Leigh primary school, which is proving to be a real hit with the community.
David Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West & Leigh, was amazed at the demand for the new provisions on a visit to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary.
Mr Burton-Sampson was amazed at the demand for the excellent new provisions on a visit to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary said he was full of admiration for how the new free breakfast club scheme is running, adding: “This is a perfect example of Labour policy in action, making a real difference to people’s lives.”
The primary school is part of the first set of new free breakfast clubs announced the government recently, before a wider rollout across England.
The MP added: “I have been told that 130 to 150 children are coming here now every morning, and parents are so keen to bring their kids here, they’re queuing to get in.
“There are different food options on the menu for children to enjoy and it helps with childcare from 08.15 in the morning if parents need it.
“But the interesting thing is that this is being used by a mixture of working parents and non-working parents, who can all see the benefit of settling children into the school environment early before the teaching day.
“Loads of activities are on offer, from dance to football and the school tells me it helps children burn off some energy as well as socialise before starting the school day proper. This helps them to settle down quicker and concentrate better on their learning.
“I am also delighted to hear that staff have noticed this ‘soft start’ has been particularly beneficial to SEND pupils.
“I cannot praise the team here enough for making all these wonderful opportunities available to pupils here and for having achieved this in record time, they set a fantastic example. This is a flagship Labour policy to get our children school ready and shows what a difference this government is making.
“Children are fed and settled in, ready to learn, before the school day and that is exactly what we want. It also can save parents up to £450 a year in childcare costs and these clubs have been shown to significantly improve children’s educational attainment.
“The wider aims of clubs like these are to help stop absenteeism in schools and break down barriers to opportunity, so that all pupils can achieve. We believe these clubs are a game-changer and I cannot commend the hard work and commitment of the staff at Our Lady of Lourdes highly enough.”
