Leigh News. Coun Paul Collins has been elected as the new leader of Southend’s Liberal Democrat Group.

FOLLOWING his resounding election victory in Southend’s Eastwood Park Ward, Coun Paul Collins has been elected as the new leader of Southend’s Liberal Democrat Group.

Former Leader of the group, Leigh Ward’s Coun Carole Mulroney said: “It is with great pleasure after his stupendous win at Eastwood Park that I reintroduce to the chamber councillor, Paul Collins.

“In recognition of Paul’s amazing achievement last week, I quite rightly cede the leadership of the Liberal Democrat Group in his favour.

“I’m sure he will absolutely great leader.”

Ms Mulroney formally announced the change in leadership during the Mayor Making ceremony at Southend’s Civic Centre on May 11.

Coun Mulroney subsequently made the following statement on her Facebook page: “Some of you will no doubt have seen that I am no longer the Leader of the Lib Dem group on the Council.

“There is nothing sinister in this changeover despite what you might hear.

“However, I am still a Lib Dem councillor for Leigh and intend to be just as involved in Council work as I have always been so my door/telephone/email/letterbox is always open for Leigh ward residents.

“I am also an independently minded councillor on Leigh Town Council – it is no place for party politics – I work for people of all parties and none in Leigh on the Town and City Council.”
