DAVID Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West & Leigh, has welcomed an extra £1.5 million which is being put into improving the future of children with special educational needs and disabilities in Southend.
The money is to provide the council with the funds to enable them to set up a new SEND service for local families called “Experts at Hand”. It will bring specialists like educational psychologists, occupational therapists and speech and language experts into schools.
The new government funding will completely transform the landscape, according to Mr Burton-Sampson.
He said: ““As part of our “See every Need” campaign we have heard from many families calling out for specialist support in schools for therapists like this.
“We have brought parents, school leaders, health representatives and charities together at frequent meetings to feed into the consultation process and I am delighted to see that the “Experts at Hand” service, will address those needs.”
The money is in addition to last month’s announcement of the biggest single funding allocation on record to deliver more school places for children with SEND.
The MP added: “In future children will be able to get early support and fast access to specialists without the need for a statutory assessment or a lengthy bureaucratic process.
“These measures are truly life changing and will have a huge impact on families, who have struggled alone for far too long.”
The money to create a bank of specialists is in addition to funding for tens of thousands of specialist places for children and the biggest SEND teacher training package ever.
“Families want the inclusion of SEND pupils to be the norm and to have a good local school for their child. We want the very best opportunities for everyone and this will be tremendously important for families with SEND children,” said Mr Burton-Sampson.
The announcement follows last month’s high needs capital allocations, where Southend received more than £2 million to create new places in early years settings, schools and colleges and to make buildings accessible.
