AN OFF-duty police officer has been arrested and a major investigation launched after an elderly pedestrian died following a crash near Southend Hospital.

Essex Police were called to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian and a car in Prittlewell Chase, Southend, at about 4.55pm on Wednesday, October 25.

A man in his 70s was taken to hospital in a serious condition, but sadly died on the morning of Thursday, October 26.

As a result of the crash, the road was closed both ways in the evening of Wednesday.

An off-duty Essex Police officer, who was the driver of the car, has been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

The Independent Office for Police Complaints (IOPC) has launched an investigation. The IOPC is responsible for overseeing the system for handling complaints made against police forces in England and Wales.

Essex Police have not confirmed or denied whether the Officer was on the way to the scene of an incident when the crash occurred.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: “We were called to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a car in Prittlewell Chase, Southend.

“The driver of the car, an off-duty Essex Police officer, is under investigation for causing death by dangerous driving and is on police bail.

“Our investigation is ongoing and, as required, a referral has been made to the IOPC.”

A spokesperson for IOPC said: “We can confirm that we have received a mandatory conduct referral from Essex Police in relation to this incident.

“We will carry out an assessment to determine if any further action may be required from us.”
