Older People's Settlement - DAVID Burton-Sampson has welcomed Labour’s new settlement for older people.
DAVID Burton-Sampson has welcomed Labour’s new settlement for older people.
Announced by the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, at the Labour Party Conference recently, the MP says this new settlement is rooted in a new National Care Service, which will be established as soon as possible in the next parliament, providing free personal care for older people.
The Prime Minister says this will be funded by adjusting the pensions triple lock, from April 2030, which will save £15 billion by the end of the decade. The adjustment means that the State Pension will rise every year by either inflation or 2.5%, whichever is higher. It will also rise by more than this if needed in some years, to ensure that it holds its value relative to average worker earnings.
Mr Burton-Sampson, Labour MP for Southend West and Leigh, welcomed the policy, praising the intention to protect a State Pension that rises every year, ensures no care charges, and delivers a National Care Service that provides older people with free personal care to give everyone peace of mind in later life.
Mr Burton-Sampson said: “Older people in Southend West and Leigh deserve a better deal.
“I believe that those who have worked hard throughout their lives should be able to look forward to security and dignity in their later years.
“Adjusting the triple lock will help us fund necessary care support for pension to ensure that everyone here in Southend West and Leigh can access the support they need as they age and enjoy greater peace of mind, whilst also ensuring the State Pension continues to rise every year”.
