LEIGH’S Parish Priest is set to leave his post at St Clement’s Church and take up Ministry on the other side of the world. Father Clive Hillman has accepted an offer to be director of the parish of South Perth, following nine years at the central Broadway church, which Father Clive has termed ‘Leigh’s Westminster Abbey’.
In a statement, Father Clive said his decision had ‘not been taken lightly’ as he fondly thanked everyone in Leigh for the care shown him during his ministry.
He said: “I have received an offer, which I have accepted, of the position of Rector of the Parish of South Perth, in the diocese of Perth, commencing on a date to be determined, subject to immigration approval being received.
“I realise that for some people disappointment is a shock, and it is not my purpose to cause upset or hurt. “Rather, I am trying, under God, to follow his calling in my life.
“Over the last nine years I have been very grateful for the love and care that I have received, and the many opportunities for priestly ministry in parish, town, and city.
“I couldn’t begin to name everyone who has been a part of my life here, to whom I owe many thanks, both living and departed”
Since 2014, Father Clive has been an important part of the town, becoming a town councillor at Leigh Town Council and being a familiar face at many local events.
Father Clive also has family links to Leigh, and would often spend childhood summer holidays in the town. Whilst he said he was grateful for the kindness and support he has received, he felt it was time to start a new stage in his ministry and for the parish of Leigh.
He continued: “I am convinced that I am not the right priest to lead you through the next stage of your life together, although I hope that something of what I have brought here has been a blessing and a benefit to some of you, and that I have been able to allow God to work through me here.”
