Leigh On Sea News: Pier Heritage Lighting – SOUTHEND Pier is one step closer to gaining new heritage lighting as part of the council’s plans to boost tourism.

Work has begun following the arrival of 80 festoon-lit columns, which will be installed along the 1.3-mile landmark at 15-metre intervals, using energy-efficient LED lights.

Daniel Cowan, Labour leader of Southend Council, said: “We’ve just taken another step in our work to regenerate and enhance the world’s longest pleasure pier, whilst celebrating the heritage that makes it so special.

“80 beautiful new columns have arrived and installation is already underway.

“They’ve been specially designed to mirror the pier’s historic lamp columns, bringing back a traditional feature with a modern twist.

“The columns will also allow us to dress the pier with flags, banners and decorations for events and special occasions.

“We’re proud to be investing in the future of Southend Pier while honouring its fantastic history, and I can’t wait to see it lit up again.”

The pier was lit up at night in its heyday, making it the jewel in the crown of Southend’s tourism offer.

Coun Matt Dent added: “Getting the pier looking like it did in its heyday is going to be fantastic.

“We have so many events on the pier and seafront coming up and these will make it all the more welcoming especially in the winter months for occasions like the Halloween parade, seafront fireworks and the Christmas lights switch-on.”

He said the council hoped the lights would be working this winter, but that no completion date had been confirmed.

Coun Cheryl Nevin, Cabinet Member for Civic Pride, said: “Southend Pier is at the heart of our city, and these improvements will help enhance its appearance, celebrate its heritage and improve the experience for visitors for years to come.”
