A CARE home in Rayleigh celebrated the 80th anniversary VE day with a 1940s-themed party.

Pinetree care home was decorated with Union Jack flags, with residents dressing up for the meaningful occasion.

Everyone enjoyed an afternoon of music, dancing, and a buffet prepared by the head chef Jenny.

The residents observed the national two-minute silence and were treated to a formal service including the last post, prayers, and the Kings address.

Damien King, general manager at Pinetree reflected on the importance of commemoration for the people of Pinetree.

They said: “Many of our residents can remember the end of the war and we all know what it meant for our country, so we wanted to celebrate the date and listen to our resident’s memories of the war and the experiences they lived through.”

John, one of the care home’s residents added: “I remember all my family gathering around the radio to listen to Churchill’s speech telling us the war was over.

“It still gives me goosebumps now.

“It was wonderful to reminisce and to celebrate with all the staff and residents here, we’ve had such fun and lots of cake.”
