Planting for a cleaner future

Rochford Council’s Open Space team has begun planting more than 2,000 saplings as part of the ambitious Parks for Nature project.

The plantings at Fairview, Ashingdon and Great Wakering are part of the initiative to create new woodland areas and help the Council achieve its commitment to being carbon neutral by 2030.

The Open Space teams were joined in the work by Cllr David Sperring, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Cllr Danielle Belton, Portfolio Holder for Climate and Economy.

Coun David Sperring, Portfolio Holder for Environment said: “Parks for Nature is creating new meadow and conservation areas, woodland habitat and wetland areas.  Introducing these areas to the traditional open spaces in Rochford will help to improve wildlife abundance and provide local communities with a wider variety of habitats to explore.

“Our aim is to create a balance between recreational and environmental areas in our beautiful open spaces.”

The tree planting season for England runs from November to March.

In Fairview 480 saplings are being planted, 960 are being planted in Ashingdon and another 960 in Great Wakering.

All trees planted will be of native species.
