THE Prime Minister visited Leigh, to see for himself the town recently lauded for the existence of prized clams in the Thames Estuary.

Southend West MP Anna Firth had invited Rishi Sunak to Leigh following the confirmation that the local waters were home to a number of razor clams and manila clams, “which are highly prized around the world.”

Mr Sunak arrived in Leigh on January 15, with a visit that started at The Hatch coffee shop in The Old Town.

In a session that included a talk introduced by Ms Firth, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the late Southend West MP Sir David Amess, who was stabbed to death while holding a constituency surgery in 2021.

He then answered questions from Southend High School for Boys pupils, and spoke to members of the audience, that included Home Secretary James Cleverly, the leader of the Council, and business owners including Phil Miller of Adventure Island,, before proceeding to Leigh’s famous fishmonger Osborne’s.

Here, he enjoyed seafood and talked with Ms Firth, Coun Paul Gilson, Leigh Town councillor and elected representative for the South East branch of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations.

Ms Firth commented: “What a brilliant way to start the week by not just welcoming the Home Secretary James Cleverly to Southend West, but also welcoming the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak.

“Starting the day with a brilliant Q&A with residents, local business owners and some of my fantastic summer work experience students.

“We discussed the opportunities the new fisheries could bring local fisherman, how to stop the boats and the Rwanda policy.

“I was delighted to show them both the terrific local fisherman, Osbourne’s who were kind enough to give us a tour and then even treated us to some delicious, local and freshly caught fish.”
