Letter from: Jill Allen-King OBE, Westcliff.

SIR, just to let you know that my retired guide dog Jagger was put to
sleep this morning (Thursday February 2), and as you can imagine, I am heartbroken.

It is so sad that I haven’t got another guide dog to look after me like Jagger and my six girls did.

Jagger was eleven and a half and had a wonderful life with me.

I want to thank all the people over the years that had helped to look after Jagger.

Letter from: Teresa Doyle, Kingswood Chase, Leigh.

SIR,  I see plans have been approved by Southend Council to demolish the former Grey Gardens, London Road and build 17 flats.

But, with only 10 parking spaces! How does this work?  There are only a few 2 hour spaces in London Road for overflow.

17 flats means 17 cars minimum surely. The side roads are already full. Beyond  belief!

Letter from: Karen Roberts, Park Road, Leigh.

SIR, having read that now an Art Studio in Leigh Broadway has applied for an alcohol licence I wonder is there anywhere left in the Broadway that does not sell food  or drinks?

Even the new bookshop that has recently opened up there has to offer a glass of wine while you read a book?  Really? do people have to eat and drink everywhere they  go these days?

The Broadway in Leigh used to be a nice place to shop once, with independent shops that you never saw anywhere else, but nowadays they must be only about five shops that are not cafes or restaurants,  and when these places put out their chairs and tables there is hardly any pavement space left to walk on!

The Broadway is completely ruined now with a Tesco, a betting shop etc. Another part of Leigh’s character has gone forever!

Letter from: Michelle Stow, Leigh.
Sir, sorry I used to really enjoy reading the Leigh News, but of late it just seems to be becoming a political vehicle for Anna Firth MP.

She gets more coverage than the hospital works story that she is referring to, a real shame.  I would really like to hear more from those that she refers to as ‘pressing’, such as Andrew Pike, as he clearly knows what is going on in Southend Hospital.

I would love to know if our MPs support our doctors, are they interviewed by a reporter, or do they provide press releases? If they are interviewed it would be great to hear their stance on that, unless I’ve already missed that.

Just also wanted to compliment you on the Nick Payne article, it could save many lives – well done.

Letter from: Richard Lee, Leigh.

SIR, I’m sure no-one would disagree with Anna Firth’s call in her Westminster Report (20-02-24) to make Southend safer, and her support for the Jo Cox Foundation’s report “to improve civility in public life and to promote respectful politics” is to be applauded.

What is troubling is her casual dog-whistle in the next paragraph, referring to the murderer of Sir David Amess and those who have threatened Mike Freer as “Islamist extremist”. That they may be isn’t the issue, but she continues: “the parallels with Jo Cox’s murder are all too evident”. The murder of Jo Cox was carried out by an overt white supremacist and avowed right-wing extremist. Why is this “parallel” unmentioned? If beliefs & convictions are relevant, then why not include them all? Or leave them all out. Or are the only extremists worth pointing out the ones you might have another agenda about?

That’s the impression I am left with, though I am sure Ms Firth didn’t intend that. After all, she concludes the section: “we also need to have open and honest discourse about the societal threats to politicians and public servants from violent extremists” and that – their angry fanaticism – is the only vile and terrible thing that unites them.

Letter from: Coun Alan Hart, Leigh Town Council.

SIR, Leigh residents clearly having a greater understanding of finances than I would profess to having myself have submitted detail responses and queries to Leigh Town Council on budgets and accounts, only to receive a one word reply of ‘noted’.

I’m sure that those residents feel that this is inadequate in the circumstances and would prefer to have some detailed reply to their concerns.

If the submissions are inaccurate, perhaps those in the know could respond accordingly, if found to be sound then adjustments should be made.

In particular the claim of gross losses highlighted by Chairman Cllr Arscott with the implication that Councillors were ‘unaware’ of these beggars the question as to whether these were misrepresented and that there was little to be of concern to Councillors – were Councillors unaware or was there nothing to see ?

Residents may share my belief that such pronouncements have more to do with maligning previous administrations and potentially Council staff, with the aim of degrading or even ending Leigh Town Council!
