Police Office Renovation - RENOVATION work has started on a former police station building in Eastwood.
RENOVATION work has started on a former police station building in Eastwood.
The building on Rayleigh Road is being converted into a new café and hair salon, in what local councillors have described as a boost for the local community.
Proposals were approved by Southend Council to convert the currently vacant site into a split use premises, with a cafe at the front with a veranda area and a hair salon in the back.
The building has not been opened to the public since its police front desk closed in 2018.
While it continued to be used by Essex police as an operational base and storage facility, it was vacated last year before being put up for sale early for around hundred and ÂŁ150,000.
Work has now begun to bring the building back into use following south council’s approval of the redevelopment plans last month.
Eastwood Park Liberal Democrats counsellor Paul Collins, cabinet minister for finance and transport, welcomed the scheme and said it would support local jobs and bring a new lease of life to this area of Eastwood.
He commented: “This is bringing back into use a building that has been out of use for years.
“A local business starting up will be welcomed and the new café and ladies’ hairdressers will indeed be a boost to local employment.”
The café is expected to open between 6 am and 6 pm on weekdays and from 8 am to 4 pm weekends and on bank holidays.
The hair salon will trade from 9 am to 9 pm Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm on Saturdays, and 9 am to 3 pm on Sundays and bank holidays.
Mr Collins added: “I’m looking forward to seeing how the plans develop and how the new business will serve local residents.”
