A GOVERNMENT housing minister has visited Leigh’s Salvation Army housing scheme.

David Johnson form the Government’s Levelling Up scheme visited The Salvation Army’s Malachi homes as part of a visit to local services for people experiencing homelessness.

Mr Johnson said it had been good to see the: “impressive Salvation Army six modular units, providing a supportive housing led approach.”

Debbie Charles, Territorial Community Engagement Lead at The Salvation Army, commented: “It was great to meet David Johnson at show him our Malachi Southend homes and to be able to listen to residents’ experiences.

“The resident shared with him how positive their experiences of living at Malachi had been.

“Having their own front doors and also being part of a group of people with support was what they needed.

“Our model of working is around the wider holistic support we can provide.”

As part of his visit, Mr Johnson also met rough sleeping leads at Southend City Council, to review delivery and outcomes, as well as visiting HARP Southend’s Homeless Charity and The Forward Trust Southend Treatment and Recovery Service.
