SHADOW Armed Forces Minister Mark Francois has called on the Government to take immediate action to protect Northern Ireland veterans from potential prosecution.

Mr Francois’ comments echo with a rapidly growing petition, ‘Protect Northern Ireland Veterans from Prosecutions,’- https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/725716 , which has garnered 45,000 signatures in just five days.

The petition, initiated by Veteran, Ian Robert Liles OBE , urges the Government to reject legislative changes that could leave Veterans of Operation Banner—the British Army’s 1969-2007 operation in Northern Ireland— open, once again to prosecution for actions taken in the line of duty against terrorism.

Commenting further Mr Francois said: “This petition is growing rapidly, having amassed over 33,000 names in barely four days.

“This is about preventing ‘two-tier justice’—one for our brave Op-Banner veterans and another for the likes of Gerry Adams. We are essentially asking people to help defend those who defended us.”

Having surpassed 10,000 signatures, the petition has triggered a mandatory Government response within three days. To secure a parliamentary debate, it requires 100,000 signatures.

Mr Francois underscored the urgency of the issue, calling on the public to: “support the cause and ensure justice for those who served.”
