LEIGH school pupils planted trees in a bid to increase happiness locally, and for future generations to enjoy.
Year 6 pupils from West Leigh Junior School, who formed a charity initiative of their own called Happiness for Everyone, planted trees with the help Southend Council’s Arboricultural Officer Edd Gillan.
A spokesperson for the school explained: “Earlier in the year, the girls had contacted the local MP about their charity, and with an idea about planting more trees in the area to help increase the happiness of the community.
“In turn, he put them in touch with Southend environment, climate and waste Councillor Lydia Hyde, who authorised the purchase of several trees to be planted in the local park in Bonchurch Avenue.”
They added: “The sun shone as the children met Edd and Councillor Hyde.
“After some instructions on how to safely plant the trees in pre-dug holes, the children and their helpers got to work.
“Edd provided the children not only with assistance in planting, but also fascinating information about the different trees, why they were chosen and the benefits they provide to the environment.
“He also threw in an impromptu maths lesson teaching the children how to measure the height of tree using a stick and their knowledge of right angles.
“The afternoon was a wonderful opportunity for all of the children and as always, they worked hard, with commitment, enthusiasm and behaved impeccably of which we were very proud.”
