£960,000 was awarded by The Community Ownership Fund, but the charity must raise the rest.

“It’s a matter of some urgency” said Sarah Wilson, General Manager. “The Haven Community Hub is a fantastic place for Southend residents with Befriending, Carers’ Support, Daily Dementia care, activity classes and events. The list is endless.”

The Table Tennis group has already organised a table tennis marathon on 12 April when  approximately 20 regular players aged from 60 to 93 will play non stop for 12 hours to help raise funds.

Their Just Giving page has raised over £1000  in sponsorship in just over a week.  “It’s wonderful how incredibly generous people are being” said Lyn Mason, the organiser: “and we hope to reach at least £2500 from our group alone.

“We must do everything we can for such a fantastic cause.

“By purchasing the historic Havens Store building, Age Concern will save £90,000 in rent a year, money which can be spent on further help and services for the community.  It’s a win/win cause.”
