DAVID Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West & Leigh, has warmly welcomed the extension of the rail saver card for young people that has been announced by the government.
“Young people in further education, training or work should not be held back by the cost of expensive rail fares”, he said.
The Government has announced that the 16–17 Saver railcard will remain valid for a full year from the date of purchase. This will allow many 18-year-olds to continue receiving half price rail travel on most journeys up to the age of 19.
Mr Burton-Sampson said: “This ends the anomaly that some students in the same academic year were paying twice as much as others, according to when their birthday was.
“The move could save many young people hundreds of pounds a year. lowering the cost of travel at a critical time for teenagers.
“It doesn’t matter whether they’re pursuing further education, vocational pathways or getting their footing in the jobs market. This is the support we want to give to people starting out in life.”
The 16-17 Saver Railcard costs £35 per year and entitles the holder to 50% off most train fares.
“This common-sense change is exactly what teenagers should expect and it will help open a lot of doors for them.”
The announcement comes after the government said the cap on most single bus fares in England will be cut from £3 to £2 next year.
