WORK is underway to create an accessible route up to an important historic site in Rayleigh.

The National Trust has announced that work has begun to create a path leading up to the inner bailey of Rayleigh Mount from The Mill Hall Arts and Events Centre.

The project is funded by the UK government through a UK Shared Prosperity Fund grant from Rochford District Council.

A spokesman for the National Trust said: “We have our funders to thank for this, but also a brilliant team of local volunteers who came for a task day earlier this winter and helped clear the undergrowth back from the original edges to make this all possible.”
