PLANS are shaping up for this year’s Old Leigh Regatta.
Back for the first time in four years, the Regatta is a celebration of nautical activities that foregrounds Leigh’s heritage with watercraft and activities on the water, as well as a colourful range of engaging events in the Old Towm.
The team of volunteers behind the event is led by Marcus Dean, group events manager for the 3rd Chalkwell Bay Sea Scout Group, who operate from a purpose-built headquarters in Old Leigh.
He and his team are ensuring that visitors on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September will enjoy food, drink and live entertainment, whilst soaking up the nautical atmosphere.
In addition to a Ferris Wheel, there will also be stalls selling locally-produced food confectionary, beer from Leigh-on-Sea brewery, and homemade gift items.
Another big drawer is this year’s Football on the Mud, a tradition that goes back decades in the Regatta.
A spokesperson explained: “there will be an adults 5-a-side on the Saturday and kids 5-a-side on the Sunday.
“England didn’t bring it home, but maybe you can?”
“Gather your squad, and use the link in our Facebook to apply for you and your team!”
Marcus also thanked the dedicated team that is behind this year’s event, from the health and safety organisation, to entertainment, deadline keeping, and branding: “Needless to say without this team there wouldn’t be a regatta to look forward to!” he said.
“In essence, The Old Leigh Regatta is a weekend for the community to come together and celebrate our relationship with the water, live music, racing, taster sessions, activities and of course food and drink will all feature!” he continued.
The organising team are still looking for volunteer stewards to help out on the day for a few hours, and recommend interested parties to fill out the form on the Facebook page: facebook.com/people/Old-Leigh-Regatta/61556790734314/?locale=en_GB
