A DEDICATED Old Leigh resident has praised the return of the Regatta, following its successful reinstation after five years.

Ron Sverdloff, Old Leigh resident and founder of Lower Thames Rowing Club, said the Regatta, which took place in the Old Town over the weekend of September 7th and 8th was: “now back in full strength thanks to the 3rd Chalkwell bay sea scouts.”

One of Ron’s highlights was the arrival of the historic little ship Endeavour, famous for having taken part in Operation Dynamo that evacuated many servicemen from the beaches of Dunkirk during in the Second World War.

He added: “It created an enormous amount of interest on Bell Wharf, especially when the Hoy Shanty Crew struck up while onboard.
However, Endeavour had to return to its moorings before it lost the tide, but unfortunately the tide won!

Ron praised the sterling efforts and hard work that saw the overnight install of the tannoy system and bunting before the suppliers arrives in vans and lorries.

“It all had to be done in reverse forty-eight hours later!” he laughed.

Ron continued: “It proved to be a wonderful weekend apart from a sudden cloud burst on Sunday drenching everyone, but that didn’t dampen their spirits.”
Ron, who runs the mobility equipment business Lifestyle & Mobility had organised a scooter race to take place on the day.

“Sadly, this had to be cancelled due to the rain’s flooding,” he said.

“But I think the town owes a great big thank you to the sea scouts in bringing a bit of fun to our town.”
