A LEIGH pub is renaming itself in honour of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute’s (RNLI) 200th birthday.

The RNLI was founded in a London inn, ‘The City Of London Tavern’ on March 5, 1824, which Leigh’s Ten Green Bottles has renamed itself as part of a series of celebrations.

A spokesperson said: “In honour of the 200-year landmark we have renamed Ten Green Bottles for this week and tonight we will host the crew of Southend lifeboat station to share stories and celebrate.

“The RNLI have saved over 144,000 lives. In 2023, 38,713 people were aided by RNLI lifesavers with 8,941 lifeboat launches.

There are 238 RNLI lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland, and 170 RNLI gift shops.

The lifesaving fleet includes: 160 All-weather lifeboats, 281 Inshore lifeboats and 7 Hovercraft including relief vessels.

The RNLI has over 32,000 volunteers including over 5,700 lifeboat crew and 4,000 shore crew.
