SIXTEEN Chalkwell Lifeguard volunteers came together at Chalkwell Beach on April 5 to take part in a new ground breaking Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) Water Rescue Equipment Training Course.

RLSS National Trainer Assessor Simon Hatfield ran two identical course sessions to enable all sixteen Chalkwell Lifeguard Club members to become fully qualified in one day and also to train 4 RLSS Lifesaving Academy Instructors to be able to continue to deliver these training sessions to additional Club volunteers during the Summer weeks ahead.

This new RLSS qualification enables volunteers to be able to safely use public access water rescue equipment and other items at hand such as plastic cans, poles and clothing tied together to carry out rescues and save lives safely from the shore without having to take unnecessary risks by entering the cold water.

Club member and Club Sponsor Chrissy Nichols from Atlantic Pacific’s ‘Unity in Community’ said: “Simon Hatfield delivered an amazing 2 hour course to help to grow the number of people with rescue skills in the local community to prevent drownings and save more lives along Southend Cities beaches.”
