BOSSES of a popular pub in Old Leigh say major revamp work is nearing completion.

The Peter Boat, in the High Street, received permission last summer from Southend Council to create a new outdoor seating area with extensions to the raised decking, alongside a new limestone patio.

The works also include changes to car parking and a new glass collection area.

The plans received two letters of objection from neighbouring residents, raising concerns about the building being “over-extended” and a potential loss of estuary views for surrounding homes and businesses.

Carole Mulroney, City for Cabinet Member for Environment, Culture & Tourism, welcomed the revamp saying: “It’s all going full steam ahead and I am sure they will try and get it done as soon as possible.

“I think the business changes things up quite regularly and we want to see things in keeping with the conservation area and the old town.

“It’s always good to see a business thriving in the context of the Old Town and we want it to fit in properly.”

The business shut for almost a month in January for the works, but has continued to trade for the last two months with the works in progress, as it nears completion.

A spokesman for the pub said: “The development is nearing completion, however we still have works in progress.”
