BOTH of Southend’s MPs were delighted to see the new urgent response team at Rochford Hospital on a visit with its leadership team.
The urgent community response team tries to prevent people being admitted to hospital if they have had an accident, like a fall, but could be seen at home. This helps take pressure off the ambulance service and is part of a new scheme that the hospital has implemented.
David Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West and Leigh, said: “It’s great to have positive news about local health services, I welcome the urgent care initiative and I praise the work of all the staff here, especially at Christmas time.
“I am very impressed with what I have seen today.
“I was glad to meet staff and young people in their education room, hear more about their mental health provision and see how the education service there works. It’s been a great introduction to the team here and I look forward to working with them in the future.”
Bayo Alaba, MP for Southend East and Rochford, added: ”It was great to speak to staff and patients at Rochford Hospital. It is helpful to see the pressures on services first hand and understand issues like the bottlenecks around discharging patients back in to the community, as well as seeing how well all the health staff are performing here.
“Rochford Hospital is a great example of a multi-site operation, with mental health and intermediate care, as well as a control centre to support those calling 999.”
The MPs were also shown around the male and female mental health wards and the stroke and rehabilitation unit at the Cumberlege Intermediate Care Centre. The 22 bed unit looks after predominantly elderly patients, who are recovering from a stroke or who need help to get better after having surgery.
Both MPs welcomed news for the NHS on the day of visit, as the government announced a package of GP reforms aimed at slashing red tape and bringing back the family doctor. New measures include the largest boost to GP funding in years with an extra £889 million for general practice.
Mr Burton-Sampson commented: “This shows how we are fixing the NHS as promised.”
