ANNA Firth MP visited the ‘Romans: Settling in Southend’ Exhibition at the Central Museum and Planetarium in Southend.

Described as an ‘immersive showcase’, the exhibition sheds light on the lives of individuals living in Roman Britain and offers a unique perspective into the rich history of our region.

Ms Firth was invited to get a sneak preview of the exhibition, which is curated by Southend Museums and features a stunning collection of Roman artefacts from across South Essex, many of which are being displayed publicly for the first time.

While other notable Roman sites in Essex, such as Colchester and Chelmsford, have received significant attention, ‘Settling in Southend’ aims to spotlight the lesser-known Roman history of the city.

Ms Firth enjoyed seeing the artefacts unearthed from Roman settlements spanning from Prittlewell to Wickford, Shoebury to Rayleigh, unveiling the enduring imprint left by the Romans on our region. She was also fascinated to learn about the personal and familiar aspects of Roman life and everyday community and domestic experiences.

Ms Firth said: “I was thoroughly fascinated to get a sneak preview of this stunning exhibition. I especially liked the way the artefacts were laid out so as to give us a glimpse into the way the Romans in Southend used to live their everyday lives all those years ago.

“I hope that many of my constituents are able to visit this exhibition over the Easter holidays as it is such an engaging experience for children and adults alike.”

A spokesperson from Central Museum and Planetarium, said: “We hope to shine a light on the extremely interesting and rich personal, familial, and community life of Roman South Essex.”

Councillor Derek Jarvis, City cabinet member for arts, culture, heritage, and leisure, said: “We are so excited to display some incredibly unique finds from our vast collection of Roman material in this important exhibition.

“We hope to shine a light on the extremely interesting and rich personal, familial, and community life of Roman South Essex.”

Romans: Settling in Southend’ runs from 23 March 2024 to 23 March 2025. Tickets will be available at the Southend Central Museum front desk and are priced at £4.50 for adults.
