A MEMBER of Leigh’s Lower Thames Rowing Club (LTRC) took part in a rowing challenge in aid of the Alex Lewis FLOAT Foundation.

Lauren Hughes joined rowers from Burnham on Crouch to row 20 nautical miles alongside Alex Lewis, to help him complete his mammoth challenge taking him from Cornwall to Dover.

Ms Hughes explained: “Alex is a quadruple amputee living life to the full whilst trying to make a difference!

“And what a difference Alex is making with FLOAT!

“The leg that me and Sherif Harding took on was between Brighton and Eastbourne – passing Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters en route, with fellow Rowers Tabitha McConnell (Eastbourne Rowing Club) and Hannah (Peterborough Rowing Club).”

Coastal Rowers Lauren and Sherif both compete in the local Harker’s Yard Winter Series every year, Lauren for Marconi Rowing Club and Sherif for Burnham on Crouch Coastal Rowing Club.

Laurent enjoyed the challenge, but said it was nonetheless hard work: “The conditions were brutal and the rowers were dowsed a few times by big waves, and the sea sickness was trying its best to make an appearance!

“South Coast of England is one of the most torturous seas to row in the world, in gusts of up to 30knots against wind and tide it was tough going.

“Huge well done and thanks to Rosemary, Geoff and Chris – as well as many, many others who acted as the best support crew both on land and sea you could ever have hoped for.”

The FLOAT Foundation is the culmination of 10 years of working in the AT (Assistive technology) space.

Their mission is to help create a world where assistive technology is accessible and affordable for all individuals.

They envision a society where every person, regardless of their abilities, can fully participate and thrive in their communities empowered by the transformative potential of assistive technology.
