THE Leigh-based Lower Thames Rowing Club (LTRC) achieved an impressive second place second at the 2024 Fixed Seat European Rowing Championships, held in Italy this August.
The mixed team, consisting of Race Captain Lauren Hughes, alongside Chris Della-Mura, Dave Colwell, and Sam Butler, made a significant impact at the prestigious race in Verbania.
The Fixed Seat European Rowing Championships is one of the most prestigious events in the world of fixed seat rowing.
Held annually, this competition attracts top rowing teams from across Europe to compete in traditional rowing boats such as the Gozzi, a vessel known for its historical significance and unique design.
The event not only celebrates the rich heritage of European rowing, but also showcases the high level of skill and endurance required to compete at this level.
A spokesperson for LTRC said: “In the early heats of the competition, the LTRC crew demonstrated their skill and determination by winning against the formidable Dutch team.
“After a hard-fought battle, through wind, rain and choppy waters, the team clinched an impressive second place, finishing behind the Italian crew, who took the gold, and ahead of the Maltese crew, who came in third.
The LTRC crew’s performance was exceptional, especially considering the level of competition and the fact that they were one of the few mixed teams in the event.”
This achievement was particularly noteworthy as the LTRC crew, composed of both male and female rowers, was up against all-male crews in a sport typically dominated by male athletes.
The spokesperson added: “this achievement has set a new standard for the club and highlighted their potential in future competitions.”
