Safe Open Spaces - CASTLE Point and Rochford Neighbourhood Policing Team say they are acting to keep open spaces safe this summer.

CASTLE Point and Rochford Neighbourhood Policing Team say they are acting to keep open spaces safe this summer.

A statement issued by Essex Police said: “Summer often brings more people into parks, which can unfortunately lead to increased anti-social behaviour (ASB) and drug-related activity.

“In response, Castle Point and Rochford Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) are, for the third summer, ramping up patrols and community engagement during this time to keep these spaces safe and welcoming.

“The local initiative will see NPT officers attend identified hotspots to keep our neighbourhoods and communities safe throughout the school holidays.”

Inspector David Kealy, leading the policing activities to tackle any potential anti-social behaviour said: “The safety and wellbeing of our residents is at the heart of everything we do.

“We don’t want to spoil people’s fun during the warm weather, but there is a balance to be struck between enjoying yourself and behaving inconsiderately to others.

“Our plans will target areas where disruptive behaviour may occur and if there is a requirement, we will speak to those present to highlight the need to be respectful whilst enjoying our parks.

“In the past, families and partners have welcomed the increased police presence and targeted patrols in open spaces or town centres and shops: many feel reassured by the proactive stance.”

Anti-social behaviour (ASB) refers to actions that cause upset and distress to people in the community. It covers a wide range of activities that, while not always criminal, negatively affect the quality of life in public spaces.

“ASB can make people feel unsafe and discourage use of our beautiful parks”: the NPT inspector added.

“That’s why your neighbourhood policing team will prioritise tackling it. We’ll be focussing on vandalism, loud or rowdy behaviour, drug use or drug dealing and verbal abuse of others.

“We all have a role to play in creating a safe, happy and positive environment.

“By treating others with respect and looking out for one another, we can ensure our public spaces remain places everyone can enjoy.”
