Safety Bollards Installed – GREEN Councillors in Leigh have secured the installation of new safety bollards following repeated reports of drivers illegally using pavements

GREEN Councillors in Leigh have secured the installation of new safety bollards following repeated reports of drivers illegally using pavements, putting pedestrians at risk.
The first bollards have now been installed on Rectory Grove outside Anytime Fitness after concerning video footage was shared with local councillors showing vehicles driving along the pavement to avoid a parking ticket.
Newly elected Leigh Councillor Anita Forde said: “we have seen a number of alarming near-misses, with pedestrians placed at risk by anti-social and dangerous driving.
“Pavements should be safe spaces for everyone, not treated as an extension of the road. We’d rather prevent accidents rather than deal with the consequences.”
Coun Stuart Allen added, “it is time we reclaimed our streets for people and made them safer for everyone.
“No parent should have to worry about their child being injured by someone illegally driving along the pavement. This is the first set of bollards we’re pushing to be installed, and we will continue pushing for further measures where they are needed.”
Tony Georgiou, operator of Anytime Fitness, said, “I want to thank our local councillors and the Council for acting so quickly on this issue.
“What we were witnessing was extremely dangerous and was putting both our members and the wider public at real risk. It’s reassuring to see these bollards now in place to help keep people safe.”
The Greens say the improvements form part of their wider ambition to create safer streets across Southend, with a long-term goal of eliminating deaths and serious injuries on the city’s roads.
