DAVID Burton-Sampson says he is ‘jubilant that new breakfast clubs are coming to schools in Leigh.’

Two schools have been selected to roll out the free breakfast clubs by April, as part of the first tranche of a new government initiative. Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School and Heycroft Primary School are the beneficiaries of Labour’s national roll out, which the government says could save parents up to £450 a year.

Mr Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West and Leigh, said: “I am absolutely delighted that these schools will be some of the first schools to benefit from Labour’s free breakfast clubs and I cannot wait to open the club in April.

“I am so glad that they applied for the scheme. I wrote to all schools outlining the benefits of making sure every child starts the school day ready to learn.

“Research shows that clubs have a lasting impact on children’s behaviour, attendance and attainment.

“Children will be able to enjoy a free breakfast and the school will provide at least 30 minutes of free childcare, every day, helping to support parents getting into work and saving them money.

“It’s a win-win for the children, their families and the schools thanks to Labour’s Plan for Change, which will make breakfast clubs universal in the future.”

Mr Burton-Sampson added that the clubs come alongside a raft of measures designed to cut the cost of living for families, including the commitment to significantly cut uniform costs through a cap on branded items, delivering on promises made to working parents in Labour’s manifesto.

“This is an opportunity to improve the futures of children in these schools. Breakfast clubs have been shown to boost children’s reading, writing, and maths by an average of two months.”
