SEND School Progress

THE MP for Rayleigh and Wickford visited the site of a rapidly-progressing SEND school development.
Mark Francois made a visit to the location of the school, being built at the Wolsey Park development in Rawreth.
The new school will be the first dedicated SEND school in the Rochford district, and is set to address growing demand for places across south Essex.
The development sits next to the 500-home Wolsey Park scheme and forms part of wider plans to expand specialist education provision in the county.
The Zenith Multi Academy Trust, which has been appointed to run the new school, already manages the Castledon special needs school in Wickford, alongside three secondary schools and one primary school.
Mr Francois visited the site, under construction by Kier, to see how construction work is progressing, and was shown the two-storey steel frame taking shape.
Mr Francois praised the progress, saying: “This project, to create the first ever SEN School in the Rochford District, has been a ‘labour of love’ of mine for over three years now.
“Due to some very hard work by the Kier Construction team, despite the recent hot weather, much of the steel frame has already been erected, in just a few months.
“If this rapid rate of progress is maintained, we should hopefully see the school open for its first SEN pupils, in the spring of next year.”
The school will provide 150 places for primary-aged children with moderate, severe and multiple learning difficulties.
An additional site at the former Chetwood School in South Woodham Ferrers is also planned to provide around 100 places for secondary-aged pupils.
Delivered by Kier Construction, the company have pledged to vest more than £4.28 million into the local economy during the build, as well as spending around £600,000 with small businesses, provide at least 60 weeks of apprenticeship opportunities and deliver 45 hours of volunteering.
