ON Small Business Saturday the MP for Southend West and Leigh, David Burton-Sampson, was out and about in Leigh meeting shop and café owners in the town centre.

He said: “I am urging people to shop local this Christmas.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy and we owe them so much.

“I have been handing out my Christmas cards to small businesses, sending them all my best wishes of the season for what they contribute to the community and for making Leigh a vibrant and thriving place.

“I wish them a happy and prosperous New Year.”

Small Business Saturday is an annual event with a mission to celebrate and support small firms on the day and beyond. Organisers hope it will provide a lifeline for them in the important run-up to Christmas.

It’s hoped that up to a fifth of Christmas spending could be in independent stores, a vital boost for small businesses.

Mr Burton-Sampson said: “Small businesses are the heart and soul of our communities. It’s absolutely vital we boost their business this Christmas and they rely on your support. So, do come out and visit them this Christmas time.”
