A LEIGH-based sign language school that is gaining momentum in the town is set to expand its classes further afield.

Sign Away BSL provides engaging British Sign Language courses and deaf awareness training in the local area, and was founded by Daniel Dominey, who has been deaf since birth.

Mr Dominey’s aim with the school was providing short sign language courses in a fun and welcoming format.

The classes are currently held at the Leigh Community Centre and involve interactive games and practical activities.

With over 300 learners in Leigh, Mr Dominey’s class is now preparing to launch in Rayleigh.

He said: “It is amazing to see how many people from all walks of life have come and enjoyed the ethos of Sign Away BSL.

“They are designed for people looking to build confidence and communication skills.”

The expansion will offer opportunities for learners across south Essex.

Mr Dominey added: “I want to make it easier for local businesses and organisations to communicate better with people.

“A little sign language goes a long way, and it’s about confidence and adapting a proactive mindset.”

Sign Away BSL offer bespoke deaf awareness and BSL workshops for local organisations, which so far have included Adventure Island, Southend Food Bank, and Southend Association of Voluntary Services.

The next beginners course starts in June and runs on Mondays in Leigh and Wednesdays in Rayleigh.
