ANNA Firth, former conservative Member of Parliament for Southend West & Leigh lead tributes to Sir David Amess on the 3rd anniversary of his murder.

On Tuesday 15th October, Ms Firth led tributes to Sir David Amess who on 15th October 2021, was stabbed by an Islamist extremist while holding his weekly surgery. He died at the scene.

On the third anniversary of his murder just before midday, a large number of people gathered in front of the statue of Sir David on Chalkwell Esplanade. The statue of Sir David had been unveiled in a ceremony in April 2024.

Ms Firth led the short service and she laid flowers sent from Rt Hon Rishi Sunak, Leader of the Opposition, which joined floral tributes sent from Rt Hon Yvette Cooper the Home Secretary, and other local dignitaries and organisations.

David Stanley and his Music Man Project singers provided uplifting music and Father Jeff Woolnough led the prayers.

The statue of Sir David provides a permanent and prominent memorial to the much loved and much missed MP, father, husband and champion of the City of Southend.

Ms Firth said: “It’s three years since Sir David Amess was brutally murdered, simply for doing his job.

“We gathered today in front of his statue on the seafront, to honour and remember him.

“Sir David was a wonderful MP and a true friend and champion to Southend. He remains much missed by us all and we send special prayers to his family who lost their beloved husband and father.

“Sir David had two wishes, firstly that Southend became a city and secondly, that his much-loved Music Man Project should go to Broadway.

“Albeit in tragic circumstances we’ve achieved the first and now we need to achieve the second. In November, the Music Man Project will launch a fund in Sir David’s memory to get them to Broadway.

“It is my heartfelt wish that during this third year we commemorate and celebrate Sir David’s life by making his second wish come true.”

Mr Stanley added: “It was an honour to perform our music today and remember Sir David, three years after his senseless death.

“In Sir David we had the greatest friend, supporter and champion.

“When we get to Broadway it will be, as it always has been, with Sir David’s blessing and with his spirit pulsing through us.”
