Niamh Connolly-Joyce, 18, is a self-taught makeup artist who has spent a number of years developing an impressive portfolio of imaginative characters and designs.
Last year, she won a creative competition run by makeup artist Val Garland, a judge on the BBC’s Glow Up, and even showcased her make up artistry on children’s television programme Blue Peter.
A keen charity supporter, Niamh was also selected to paint one of Haven Hospice’s Penguins for the Waddle-on-Sea public art trail last summer, creating a special David Bowie-inspired creation.
With Bowie as a constant inspiration, Niamh is fascinated by the transformation that creative make up can bring about, and this season applied this to her love of all things Gothic.
Niamh explains that her ‘31 days of Halloween’ project was inspired by her lifelong love of the season: “I have adored Halloween all my life and always loved things that are weird and wonderful,” she said.
The creations secured her two online competition prizes: one in Buffed Cosmetics’ seasonal competition and another after winning the international Make Up Cover Page Halloween makeup contest, to add to her awards recently received through online company Girl Meets Brush.
The project has also given her the chance to expand her portfolio and develop new techniques.
Balancing the daily makeup looks with college and coursework has been challenging, but Niamh’s passion has kept her going.
“It’s definitely worth it!” she said.
After finishing college next year, she plans to pursue a makeup apprenticeship or sponsorship, with the aim of working in the film or theatre industry.
She also hopes to appear as a contestant on the BBC’s Glow Up, describing Val Garland as her “absolute inspiration”.
