Stabbing Men Sentenced

A MAN who left his victim with life-changing injuries in a stabbing in Westcliff has been jailed for seven years and six months.
A police statement said: “Twenty-year-old Oliver Champion admitted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a knife following the attack on 8 November last year.
“His brother, Oscar Champion, 18, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
“The pair were sentenced at Basildon Crown Court on Friday 17 July.
“The incident happened at about 8.30pm in Station Road, Westcliff. Officers arrived at the scene and found a man suffering from multiple stab wounds. The victim sustained critical injuries and continues to live with the long-term effects of the attack.
“An investigation was launched immediately, with officers carrying out extensive CCTV enquiries and taking witness statements to identify those responsible.
“Footage showed Oliver Champion leaving his home address in Palmerston Road, a short distance from where the incident took place. He was followed from his address by his distinctive dog, which further helped investigators in tying him to the offence.
“Footage then captured Oliver and Oscar Champion chasing the victim on foot. As the victim ran into Station Road, he fell against a wall after tripping at the end of Palmerston Road. The brothers then launched their attack.
“The assault only came to an end when a member of the public spotted what was happening and repeatedly sounded her car horn, causing the pair to flee.
“Following the attack, Oliver Champion sought to evade arrest by switching off his mobile phone, staying away from his home address and making plans to leave Essex.
“Southend CID, together with Southend’s Proactive Problem Solving Team, part of the Neighbourhood Policing Team, launched an extensive search to locate him. Four days later, on the evening of 12 November, officers traced him to an address in Southend. As officers forced entry through the front of the property, colleagues were positioned at the rear to prevent any escape.
“Oliver Champion attempted to flee but was stopped by an officer who challenged him with a Taser before arresting him.
“Further enquiries later linked Oscar Champion to the attack and he was arrested on 19 November.
“At court, Oliver Champion was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison. Oscar Champion received an 18-month community order. He was also ordered to complete 50 hours of unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Sergeant Alex Farr, from Southend Neighbourhood Policing team said: “This was a determined effort to track down a dangerous offender who believed he could avoid justice.
“Thanks to the persistence of officers and the strength of the evidence gathered, Oliver Champion was identified, located and brought before the courts.
“The victim suffered life-changing injuries as a result of this attack. Our thoughts remain with him as he continues his recovery.
“Knife crime can have devastating consequences for victims, families and communities.
“We will continue to pursue those who carry and use weapons, while working with partners to prevent violence and steer young people away from offending.”
