THE Leigh Striders had 27 runners taking part in the London Marathon this year on a sunny, but chilly day – perfect conditions for the runners, a bit nippy at times for the spectators!
Once again Leigh Striders also took a large contingent of volunteers to help at the end handing out water, medals, foil wraps and hugs where needed!
First back for Leigh was Michael Wilkes in 2 hours 44 minutes, the week after he did Manchester marathon, and two weeks before Milton Keynes marathon, all to raise money and awareness for MNDA (Motor Neurone Disease Association). Next back for Leigh was Vicky McElligott with a new PB and a stunning time of 2 hours 57 minutes.
Jim Dodsworth finished in an impressive time of three hours 53 minutes. A very good time by most people’s standards but even more impressive as he did it running in an Emu costume!
Mr Dodsworth said: “As ever, this event never fails to delight me whether as a runner, a volunteer or a spectator.
“I genuinely love it more than Christmas Day and think it brings out the best in people. This year I ran for the Alzheimer’s Society with a little help from Ethel the Emu who was my spirit, and literal, animal for the day, despite being misrepresented as a flamingo on countless occasions.
“What a day!”
