A RUNNER in the Leigh Striders broke a world record as part of this year’s London Marathon.
The Leigh-based running club had 27 runners taking on the famous annual challenge, but one of their participants did it in particular style.
Stuart Cable ran dressed in a safari suit and finished in 3hrs 14, breaking the existing record by over 35 minutes.
Mr Cable said: “I was running for Mencap to raise money for the fantastic work they do for those with learning difficulties.
“I have run marathons before, recently completing the Brighton Marathon in just over three hours.
“To add to the challenge at London I attempted to break a Guinness World Record for the fastest time dressed in a safari suit.
“It certainly wasn’t easy and took some special effort to cope with overheating and the extra weight of the outfit once it got wet. But I got plenty of support on the day from the fantastic crowds braving the rain and cheering on ‘safari man’ or ‘explorer guy’!”
The first Leigh Strider to finish was Michael Wilkes in 2hrs 49, with Vicky McElligott first female Strider in 3hrs 05.
A Leigh Striders spokesperson said: “As well as running, there were lots of Striders represented in the volunteering at the event, handing out the goody bags to finishers.
“The rain didn’t dampen their spirits, and they loved welcoming all the finishers back – especially their fellow Striders.”
