SOUTHEND Council is inviting members of the public to visit a pioneering sustainable home in Juniper Road in Leigh.
The three-bedroom semi-detached house, first unveiled in late November last year, showcases a range of energy and water-saving features, and residents are now being invited by the council to book a viewing and see firsthand how these eco-friendly innovations can transform a typical home.
This initiative forms part of the council’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. With around 40% of the council’s carbon emissions originating from its housing, retrofitting homes is key to reducing this impact.
The Juniper Road show home serves as an educational resource and a first step towards this goal, highlighting effective technologies and their practical application for South Essex Homes residents and partners.
Jo Gay, head of environment at Southend City Council, expressed her enthusiasm: “The Juniper Road project is a testament to the power of collaboration.
“It is a prime example of how eco-friendly homes can be both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable, integrating technology seamlessly for everyday living.”
Coun Meg Davidson, deputy leader and cabinet member for environment, emphasised the comprehensive approach of the project: “It’s not just about insulation and energy efficiency. This home also features thoughtful details like sustainable landscaping and a slimline water butt for rainwater recycling.
“The best way to appreciate these features is by visiting and experiencing the space yourself.”
A newly released video (youtube.com/watch?v=xQqRZp9rcf0&ab_channel=Southend-on-SeaCityCouncil) offers an in-depth look at the Juniper Road project, including interviews with the project team and the council’s portfolio holder.
Additionally, a podcast launching early February will feature a detailed discussion with the council’s housing sustainability team and other experts.
Tours of the Juniper Road home are available upon request until the end of February. To book your visit, please contact the Housing Sustainability team at [email protected].
