DAVID Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West and Leigh, has welcomed the drive to get rough sleepers off the streets, which he says should help local homeless charities.
The Prime Minister has pledged to ‘get people out of the cold’ by Christmas and committed another £100 million, boosting the package to £442 million in total, to help end homelessness.
Mr Burton-Sampson said:” I have seen for myself what a blight on people’s lives being homeless is. Local charities like HARP and St Vincent’s have shown me the excellent work they do, in tackling rough sleeping and homelessness.
“Homelessness is a complicated problem and as well as emergency accommodation and practical help, people need to build a more stable future.”
The Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, is urging Mayors and councils to work with faith groups and other community leaders and promised a “national summit” in the autumn.
Mr Burton-Sampson added: “The summit will build a sense of urgency. This funding will help people rebuild their lives. It is good for them, good for the local community and ultimately, good for the public purse too, as preventing homelessness saves taxpayers money.
“I know that here in Southend, we can pull together to make a real change.”
Official figures showed 4,793 people were sleeping on the streets nationally on a sample night last autumn, which was a record high.
