Takeaway To Residential - A FORMER Indian takeaway in Chalkwell could be turned into homes under new plans submitted to Southend Council.
A FORMER Indian takeaway in Chalkwell could be turned into homes under new plans submitted to Southend Council.
Proposals have been submitted to Southend Council for Zafran to become a home following the closure of the business.
Zafran, which previously occupied the ground floor of the property at 809 London Road was an award-winning takeaway, founded by chef Abdul Sobur.
With over 35 years’ experience in the Indian and dining industry, Abdul was a highly-esteemed businessman, whose takeaway garnered numerous awards for culinary excellence, including winning chef of the year for Essex in a BBC contest.
Mr. Sobur also founded the British Bengal Curry Awards, for which he acted as director.
The application submitted to Southend Council would extend the properties residential floors from one to two.
According to the application, the owners would seek to secure a change of use from ground floor restaurant to dwelling house with alterations to its elevations.
The alterations to the elevations have already received prior approval from Southend Council.
The change of use from takeaway to residential use has been termed a “shame” by one local counsellor.
Conservative Councillor for Chalkwell James Courtenay reportedly said: “It’s always a shame to see retail and hospitality places close, and it will be interesting to see what the proposed development entails.
“Obviously, there’s a demand for more residential properties.
“But I’m always interested to keep an eye on over-development along London Road.”
