A VACANT Leigh clothes store could become a restaurant after an application for an alcohol licence was submitted to Southend Council.
Zinc Menswear, at 59-61 Broadway, closed suddenly in January 2023, leaving speculations open around the site’s future.
Now, an alcohol licence application has been submitted revealing a new restaurant, named “The Golden Nugget” could take its place.
The application is proposing the sale of alcohol both on and off the premises from Monday to Saturday 8am to 11pm.
This is lowered by an hour for Sunday when it will close at 10pm.
The site has been placed on the market by estate agent Ayers and Cruiks.
The listing states: “Leigh Broadway witnesses significant pedestrian and vehicular activity. Convenient lay-by parking lines the street, and a nearby car park provides additional parking options. Situated within a mile of Leigh and Chalkwall Station, with accessible bus routes from both Broadway and London Road.
“The property is situated on the north side of Leigh Broadway and benefits a 33ft frontage the property also features a spacious retail area, a kitchenette, restrooms, and several changing rooms along with a store room.”
Leigh Councillor Peter Wexham commented: “This is another big loss of a shop being turned into a wine bar or pub.
“It is a large building and will attract a large number of people, which can only cause more noise and stress to the residents living in the side roads off the Broadway.”
Southend Council will have the final say on the licensing application.
