THE family of a cyclist who died following a collision in Westcliff have paid tribute and said he was a devoted family man who: “left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate to know him.”
Steve Ames, 72, died in hospital on Thursday 22 October, two weeks after a collision with a pedestrian in West Road at 4pm on Thursday 8 October.
A spokesperson for his family said: “Steve Ames was quite a character and someone who left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
“He was a devoted family man who shared a particularly close bond with his brother, Shaun.
“Steve had a real soft spot for animals. He adored his cat and always made a huge fuss of our grumpy cockapoo, Cooper. His love of animals was evident throughout his life and is reflected in his final wishes, with the majority of his estate being left to animal charities.
“He was a man of many interests and took great pleasure in his boat, his cars and his e-bike. Despite living with COPD and asthma, Steve was never one to sit still. He was always out and about, making the most of every opportunity life presented to him.
“Earlier this year, Steve retired and treated himself to a 60-year-old MG, something that brought him immense joy. He also loved spending time at his local pub, where he enjoyed socialising with friends and family.
“Above all, Steve had a passion for being on the water. Throughout many glorious summers, he took great pleasure in sharing his boat with others, creating happy memories for those lucky enough to join him.
“Anyone who knew Steve, whether as a brother, brother-in-law, friend or neighbour, will remember his kindness, generosity and big heart. He touched many lives with his warmth, humour and friendship, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him.
“We are going to miss our Steve more than words can say, but we will always cherish the memories, laughter and love he gave us.
“Rest in peace, Steve.
“And finally, in Steve’s memory, if you’re a cyclist, please wear a cycle helmet.”
Police continue to investigate the collision.
