TRIBUTES have been paid to a beloved businessman and local jeweller.
Christopher Vinten, who sadly died this August following a sudden heart attack, was a leading light in the world of fine jewellery, establishing his boutique C.J. Vinten in Leigh over 40 years ago.
A statement online by his family announcing the sad news of Christopher’s passing read: “His death was a huge shock and we are absolutely devastated.”
“It’s the second blow we have had recently as a family and our hearts are aching.”
From a young age, Christopher was designing and hand crafting jewellery, and after a brief stint of travelling, he studied for a four-year jewellery design and manufacture course at Medway College, gaining a Distinction and numerous awards for his innovation and creativity.
After training under prestigious Dutch Goldsmith Leo DeVroomen, Christopher established C. J. Vinten Goldsmiths at 85 Leigh Road in 1983.
The location started as a small show room and workshop, but over time, Christopher extended the shop, as the company grew and became well known for the quality and personal service that became its hallmark.
Since Christopher’s semi-retirement in 2014 his children, Lance and Lily, took over the running of the shop and workshop.
A Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and a Freeman of the City of London, he was well known for his exquisite craftsmanship, but also as a cherished member of the Leigh community.
Upon hearing the sad news, customers and residents took to social media to remember with fond memories and condolences, noting both his kindness, talent, and commitment to the town.
A spokesperson for the Leigh Road community Facebook group said: “Chris was a lovely gentleman and a supporter of Love Leigh Road and its community from afar.”
A customer said: “Such a lovely and talented man. He made my engagement and our wedding rings 20 years ago.”
Another person noted how Christopher’s “spirit and lust for life was infectious.”
In a further post, Christopher’s children assured customers and well-wishers that his legacy would continue, confirming: “We will course we’ll continue with our father’s business,
“Thank you everyone for your patience and kind words, they definitely have not gone unnoticed.”
