TRIBUTES have been paid to a local lifeboatman, who has sadly passed away, aged 81.
Colin Sedgwick MBE owned Mikes Boatyard Old Leigh and spent a lifetime at the forefront of the Old Leigh maritime community.
Mr Sedgwick became a member of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute on his 16th birthday in 1958.
In his first year, he received the Royal Humane Society certificate for being part of a crew that saved a life at sea when a speedboat sank. His passion for the sea had already started at the age of 11, when he joined the Chalkwell Bay Sea Scouts, later leading the group for eight years as Sea Scout Leader of Nelson Troop in the 1960’s and 1970’s
Mr Sedgwick received an MBE for his work with the RNLI in 2012.
In 2020, Mr Sedgwick became Vice President of 3rd Chalkwell Bay Sea Scouts.
Mr Sedgwick, a husband and father to four sons, spoke in 2012 about receiving his MBE.
He told the BBC at the time that he had “really enjoyed” his time with the RNLI, adding: “We need lots of volunteers and the right sort of volunteers, and in a lot of cases we need younger people.”
His son, Jonathan Sedgwick, now runs Mike’s Boatyard, and continues his father’s legacy.
