TRIBTUES have been paid to a kind and committed music teacher, who devoted her life to music education and the mentoring of others.

Margaret Evans, 87, sadly died on December 14, leaving three children, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

A school teacher for 40-years, Mrs Evans taught at Bournemouth Park School, Hamstel Junior School and was head of music at Dowsett High School for Girls.

She also taught English and was head of house at Eastwood, whilst later working as the professional mentor as part of the teacher training programme at the school.

Her son, Keith Evans, who is a Leigh Town councillor for Bonchurch Ward, said the family have been left devastated by the loss of Mrs Evans, which followed that of her husband Dennis last year.

Mr Evans, who Mrs Evans met in 1955 when he was on national service, was also a musician and teacher, and during his career was head of music at Westcliff High School for Boys.

Coun Evans said: “Once my mum and dad competed against each other with different school choirs at the Leigh Festival.”

Mrs Evans was not only a music teacher, but a committed citizen who was involved in local charities including the Salvation Army, and always looked out for others.

She taught so many people that even lately, when she was in hospital, the ward manager and some of the staff knew her from school.

“There was no hiding place from the people who knew her or knew of her,” recalled Coun Evans fondly.

“Both Dennis and Margaret are sorely missed,” he added.
